Diamond in the Back

Stumbled across the classic (and oft covered and sampled) William de Vaughn track "Be Thankful for What You Got" this week! So good. Kind of weird that first on the chopping block wound up last in the oven!

You know what? He's right. Fuck a Cadillac. Maybe this is just too many years spent listening to soul heartbreak, but I think we all ought to wear our heartbreaks and hurdles like badges instead of scars. THAT'S the real diamond in the back. THOSE are our gangsta' white walls.

Pam Grier.

After you've given it a listen, I'm pretty sure you'll agree that this is an appropriate title.

Chocolate Milk

If you don't own this funky little New Orleans R&B number, do yourself a favour and get to owning it.

These guys replaced the Meters as Allen Toussaint's studio band! Louisiana royalty, y'all!

I haven't listened to this since last fall, and it may have been the pivotal point for this week's Good Gravy. MAYBE.

The Usual

Here's a delicious little selection with more of an early 60's vibe than last Gravy. The Usual might sound dismissive- negative even as title! I don't see it that way. Sometimes, there's nothing better than walking into your favourite restaurant, ordering your favourite drink, sitting down at your favourite table, smiling at the waitress who knows your name, and saying "The Usual, please." You savour EVERY. DAMN. BITE... don't you?

This particular concoction pairs equally well with a late night drink, or with your bacon and eggs first thing in the morning.

(Longtime followers of the blog may have noticed I've done a little spring cleaning in terms of all 50 (!!) former podcast posts hitting the road. Fresh slate! If anyone is interested in any of my older podcast, please let me know.)
